Babeş-Bolyai University, in Cluj-Napoca (UBB), Romania, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (AMU), (Poland), and the University of Trieste (UT), Italy in collaboration with the Santander Group European Universities’ Network (SG) are organising the Balkan Summer School (BSS), an event funded by the Central European Initiative University Network (CEI).
This year's CEI Balkan Summer School's is for doctoral students and will focus on Leaderships Skills of Young Researchers as Drivers for Innovation in Higher Education.
Regarding the individual perspective, leadership skills are becoming crucial for the career development of the academic staff, both researchers and teachers. The impact of the leadership skills on the improved and effective teaching and learning has been proved by the study carried out by the Wallace Foundation in the USA that indicates leadership’s mechanism such as setting clear directions, developing people, and measuring organisational performance as crucial to transform schools and universities.
While teaching continues to be the centre of attention at universities, research production is becoming a factor that conditions a competitive position in global rankings. Researchers worldwide are facing challenges to lead and manage international research teams, secure new research grants, liaise with stakeholders, publish, respond to with institutional issues and agendas, and maintain and develop their own research expertise. It becomes indispensable for researchers to acquire a wide range of leadership and management responsibilities and for that they need to be provided guidance and support in the following areas:
- Fostering academic entrepreneurship
- Building creative and innovative environment in the academic community
- Leading research teams
- Identification of leadership styles
- Development of leadership techniques
- Communication and work approaches in an international environment
The event will take place between 27 August - 31 August 2012. The introduction and wrap-up sessions will be at Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The school will move to the mountains in Transylvania for the main sessions.
