What is SGroup PhD Cup?

The SGroup PhD Cup is an international competition designed for PhD students and young researchers from universities that are members or associate members of the SGroup Network. The contest focuses on enhancing participants' communication skills, particularly their ability to effectively present their research to a broad audience.

Key Features of the Contest:
  • Training:
Selected participants receive fully funded online training focused on rhetoric and communicating research results to non-specialist audiences. This takes place over two days in May.

  • Competition Format:
The competition is modeled after the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) pitch format, where participants must present their research clearly and engagingly in just three minutes.

  • Video Submission & Selection:
Participants submit a video pitch. The top 10 candidates are announced in June, and the top 5 finalists are invited to present live during the SGroup Annual Meetings in October.

  • Final Presentation & Prize:
The finalists deliver their 3-minute pitch to the SGroup General Assembly. The winner is awarded a PhD Mobility Grant of up to €1,000 to conduct research abroad at an institution of their choice.

Eligibility:
  • Must be a PhD student formally enrolled at an SGroup member or associate member university.

  • Recent graduates are not eligible.

  • Applicants must still be PhD students in October of the competition year.

  • Open to young researchers who already have results to share.

  • Each university’s highest-scoring applicant will be selected for training; no limit on applications per university.
