SG Panel Sessions At Eaie Annual Conference 2011

The three SG sessions selected by the EAIE board are:

5.08: How does the South of Europe Compete in the International Higher Education arena?

Thursday 15 September, 11.30–12.30
Proposed by Marina Casals Sala from Rovira i Virgili University, this session will tackle the issue of Universities from Southern Europe generally feeling at a disadvantage versus the universities from Central and Northern Europe, where English is more widely used, and their power of attraction of international students is more consolidated. How can these universities compete globally? Three SG case studies from three different Southern European countries will be presented, and an open debate with the audience will follow.

10.02: How to win the hearts and minds of students: creative recruitment strategies

Thursday 15 September, 10.00–11.00  
Declining student enrolment, global competition, attracting students, establishing cooperation with strategic regions are only a few examples why universities worldwide apply recruitment strategies. This session will present innovative and creative approaches towards recruitment strategies at universities from the Santander Group Universities' Network - Norwegian University of Science and Technology and University of Gothenburg - and UNICA Network - Tallin University of Technology. Creating a genuine communication plan, setting up modern admissions offices, gauging the effectiveness of the recruitment procedures by applying control indicators, or building strategic partnerships or networks for achieving your goals will be highlighted by the speakers.

8.09: EU-African Collaboration for Capacity Building of Universities

Friday 16 September, 10.00–11.30
Development of cooperation with African universities for capacity building is a critical element of universities' internationalisation strategies. Such partnerships can strengthen research collaboration, help upgrade skills of academic and administrative staff, and develop solid and capable university management. Santander Group and their African partners will present examples of capacity building initiatives such as: assistance with developing international relations, research collaboration on a PhD level, measures preventing brain drain from Africa, (re)training of research and university staff, improvement of research infrastructure, development of policies retaining staff at African universities.
